Parrot Fish: Identification Guide & Species Facts

Deep blue-black body with turquoise markings. One of the most visually striking reef species.

Bullethead ParrotfishChlorurus sordidus

Wide Indo-Pacific distribution; stocky shape and orange-spotted TP male. Extremely common.

Bicolour ParrotfishCetoscarus bicolor

IP fish are white with an orange patch; TP males are green with pink and blue highlights.

Habitat & Behaviour

Parrot fish thrive on coral reefs, seagrass beds, and rocky subtidal zones across tropical and subtropical waters worldwide — primarily the Indo-Pacific, Atlantic, and Caribbean. They are diurnal (active by day) and often seen in loose schools grazing coral and algae with their powerful beaks. At night many secrete a mucus cocoon thought to mask their scent from predators.

Their grazing is so significant that a single parrot fish can produce up to 90 kg of white sand per year — much of what you stand on at tropical beaches was once coral processed by parrot fish.
